Everyone loves seeing pumpkins in fall
The key to a fall makeover is in the presentation

A little jar with mini pumpkins is adorable and festive. Who doesn’t love a little color of orange and green in their living room when fall hits? Now that the leaves are starting to change color, it’s important to keep your home up to date with the changing season. Adding mini pumpkins will keep your energy up and serve as a reminder of things to look forward to, i.e. Halloween and Thanksgiving! It will also give your guests a warm welcoming as they step into your home and see these festive touches. Everyone notices small things like this!

A beautiful bedroom window with a blooming plant and candle creates happiness in the most unexpected ways.

Spring may be special in all its color and glory, but fall is just as wonderful for growing plants at home. Buy a basil plant and keep it in your window sill where the sun shines, and remember to feed it daily. Soon, you will find it flourishing to be taller and stronger than you could imagine. Plus, the great thing about Basil plants is they smell wonderful, and you can always cut a little off to add to your pastas or salads. Decorate your window sill with plants, great reads, picture frames, and some of our high-end embroidered tissue box covers and curtains seen in the above photo.

New Year’s Resolutions – Renew You with a Home Spa

A Home Spa – Incentive to Stick to Those Resolutions

The big new year’s celebration is over, and for some those resolutions have already been forgotten, but for many a resolution to get healthier is a very real, and very attainable goal. If you’ve vowed to run more, walk regularly or renew that gym membership and really use it, read on! Consider creating a home spa to relax and rejuvenate after your workout. It’s a definite motivator, and It’s easy with these 4 simple steps!

Create a Home Spa Environment

When you go to the spa, what do you notice first? The scent of eucalyptus? The soothing music? The soft, fluffy towels? These are easy to recreate in your home spa!

Spa Scents Made Easy

From aromatherapy candles, to essential oils and room sprays, the scent of a spa is an immediate signal to your brain that its time to relax and revitalize. ScratchMommy recommends the following to ease you into a relaxed state of mind:

  • Jasmine, rose, chamomile, or ylang-ylang for frustrations with loved ones
  • Citrus, lavender, sandalwood or sage if dark days have you feeling down.
  • Oregano, peppermint, eucalyptus, pine or rosemary can help with a stuffy head

ScratchMommy also has a great candle recipe using beeswax or soy to create a soothing scent to turn your bath into a sweet space to rediscover your sanity.

Music to Relax and Inspire

Relaxing in a warm bath with soft music in the background is a great way to end a busy day, or soak away tightness in tired muscles. Kohler has some great tips for adding music to your bathroom to help create that spa environment. The Moxie Showerhead and wireless speaker is an easy addition to make your favorite music a part of your Home Spa. The speaker just pops into the showerhead, and is interchangeable so each family member can have their own.

Or if you’re into a bit more immersive experience, consider the VibrAcoustic Hydrotherapy system which works with your smartphone, tablet or MP3 player to send vibrations pulsing above and below the waterline!

Look for appropriate spa music on iTunes, Pandora, or even your Amazon Echo Dot and you’ll be ready to sit back and relax.

Fluffy Towels, Robes, and Slippers Complete the Sensory Experience of a Home Spa

We can’t forget the luxurious feeling of fluffy towels for drying, slipping your feet into linen slippers and wrapping yourself in a luxurious robe after your home spa experience. Quality cotton like that used in products offered by Jacaranda Living can give you that spa at home feeling every day!

Generous bath sheets – 35” x 70” are large enough to wrap you up after a hot shower, or a warm bubble bath. Choose from white or ivory to give that clean, uncluttered spa look to a bathroom. If you want to give your home spa a personal touch, why not choose embroidered designs drawn from the sea, or our popular Bee Wreath design.

Sweet Accessories Amp Up the Home Spa Feeling

Looking to really transform your bath to give it that home spa feeling? Consider adding a fluffy terry robe, an elegant shower curtain, and even slippers and a shower cap all embroidered with the same design. With 100% cotton, you’ll have the soft, super absorbent accessories you love at the spa, right in your own home! What a great way to reward yourself after a long run, or a yoga class. It’ll keep you on track and be an incentive to continue to treat yourself throughout the year. Why not? You deserve it!

Consider adding a dimmer switch to your bathroom lighting. Add a small table for candles, a favorite book, hand-made sugar scrubs, or a glass of wine. With just a few simple steps your family bathroom becomes a home spa you’ll look forward to using every day!

5 ideas for an upscale Halloween party

bigstock-Sexy-model-woman-with-glass-of-76775420-300x211

Halloween parties can be a lot of fun, but you don’t have to settle for mass-printed paper decorations and a punchbowl full of candy to complete your theme. With a little imagination and a DIY spirit you can transform your gathering from vague to vogue.

Pumpkin ice buckets

Store your cold beverages in hollowed-out pumpkins and fill in the remaining gaps with ice. For a more eerie look use white pumpkins. Don’t carve a face into the gourd or you will have a watery mess on your hands.

Masquerade

It’s hard to keep a consistent theme when your guests come dressed as a ghost, The Joker and a space ninja. Instead of costumes, encourage your guests to come in a limited formal wear and supply them them with masks. Consider black tuxedos for the men and white dresses for the women, such as ones from our line of cotton sleepwear. You can purchase a collection of masquerade domino masks or even create your own felt animal masks to liven things up.

Black cocktails

It’s one thing to create mixed drinks along a theme, but it pays to go one step further and give them a striking visual tie-in. Consider getting black sugar to rim the glasses and add whole blackberries into the mix, or try classic drinks like a brain hemorrhage or blood-red sangria.

Party by candlelight

Create some good mood lighting by unscrewing or disabling all the lights and use expressive candles instead. The dim lighting will give the party an inky atmosphere. You can opt for clusters of thick white candles and mix it up with a few skull-shaped candles here and there. Just make sure you have some type of barrier to restrict the melted wax so it doesn’t spill onto the carpet.

Monochromatic candy

It’s routine to see a mix of orange and black candy in a dish during Halloween. Make your display stand out by limiting your candy to a single color, such as all red or all white candies in a clear glass dish. You can order bulk M&Ms and jelly beans in any color and mix in marshmallows or licorice.

10-Chaise or Chair?
Seek out a nice tufted chaise or leather tufted arm chair.  This can be a comfortable place to unwind or read like Lord and Lady Grantham.  This leather chaise is perfect for enjoying your fireplace. leather couch - leather chaise - downton abbey leather couch - downton abbey furniture - downton abbey couches - downton abbey living room - downton abbey library - downton abbey decor

Reality TV has allowed us a glimpse into homes we could only dream of owning, but that doesn’t mean that you have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to get the same look.

You can get many of these items at a local antique or consignment store for less than $100/piece if you like to bargain hunt and pick up do it yourself pieces.  If they aren’t the color you want, you can always strip them and refinish them.

The nice thing about pieces like these is that they are made of solid wood, last forever and have lots of character, you can change them up over and over. Great for those who love DIY projects.

Accents and decor:
Once again you can get the sitting chairs, antique plates, and vintage lamps for an inexpsenive price at an antique or vintage store. We also found some great reproductions from Ballard Designs, the Bergere Chair is the perfect match. You can also pick from all the fabric choices on their website.

Turn your rental unit into a home you can be proud of

Nothing says temporary like living out of a box or suitcase so, if you want to create a space that feels like home, unpack.  Everything.   Remember the rental unit is not your own so it would be wise to consult with your landlord before you make any permanent changes to the unit.

Most landlords want long term tenants who care for and maintain their space like it was their home, therefore keep open communications going with your landlord and you should be able to create a home environment that most would envy.  And if you are a transient renter, there is no reason why you cannot create the homey refuge of your dreams, wherever you are.

Below are suggestions to make any rental space your own.

Address the walls – If the landlord will not allow you to paint, do not be rebuffed, put up pictures and creative artwork.  If you are worried about putting holes in the wall, just remember to cover the holes before you vacate the unit.

Swap out hardware – Buy and install hardware that suit your individual style but save and reinstall the existing hardware prior to your departure.

Anthropologie Hardware, Designer Hardware for Cabinets and Drawers

Add lighting – If you do not like the utilitarian lighting fixtures in your unit, buy ones that suit you and install them.  Again, these are your fixtures and you can take them with you when you leave but, you must replace the fixtures you removed with the owners fixtures (make sure that they are still in working order)

Add Color – This can be easily accomplished with area rugs, pillows, artwork and window treatments.  Have fun.  There are no limits.  Again, painting may be an issue with the landlord, but do not rule it out.  It does not hurt to ask permission to paint, the worst thing he can say is no.

Add plants – Bring the outdoors into your apartment with vibrant colors, aromas and energy.  Do some research and choose plants that fit your lifestyle.

Invest in quality furniture and accessories that you like and suit your individual personality.   For that extra homey, crisp and polished ambiance, invest in fine cotton or cotton/linen blend accessories.  They are luxurious to the touch, easily interchangeable for personal style and satisfy any individual indulgence.   Consider these an investment, quality items well worth your while to purchase, because these items will move with you, allowing you to recreate your environment wherever you roam.
