College Students Want a Dorm Room With the Feeling of Home

College dorms are buzzing. College students are meeting new roommates, finding their way to classes, and for some it’s a first time away from home. That can result in a touch of homesickness that you as a parent can help with.  Hercampus.com recommends a number of great tips to help the new college student. These can include staying connected with home. But “not too connected.”

Staying Connected While Letting Go

A comfy pile of pillows makes a dorm room a cozy oasis

A great way for parents and loved ones to help with that “staying connected thing” is a care package from home. Look for snacks, photos, and dorm room decorations to include in a care package. Consider mugs, toss pillows, and even a comfy blanket to make all the difference. Having a warm, welcoming room to come back to after a long day of classes, or to hunker down in when a new student is suddenly down with a cold and far from the comforts of home, can make all the difference in the world for seeing a new way of life in a positive way.

Turning a Dorm Room Into a Cozy Space

Matching toss pillows in a neutral design can make a nice gift for new roommates

HGTV recommends keeping the size of a room in mind. There isn’t a lot of space for furniture and additional storage. But simple things like toss pillows and comforters can give the room a welcoming, “hug-from-home” feel when its needed most. Coordinating colors can be tough with a roommate or two, but items in a neutral palette can work perfectly. And something as simple as matching toss pillows can be a sweet “getting to know you gift” that can also make a room more comfortable.

Great “Care Package” Theme Ideas

DIY Ready suggests creating themed care packages:

  • First Day College Care Package – including supporting notes, USB sticks, pens, candy, and office supplies
  • Things-You-Forgot Package – including bathroom essentials, snack bars, and socks
  • Get Well Soon Package – using a large coffee/tea mug, and including honey, cold medicine, lozenges, and a caring note from home
  • Winter is Coming Package – If your child is a Game of Thrones fan, they’ll get a kick out of that message, but include mittens, hats, scarfs, and even a lightweight comforter that’s large enough for a few friends to snuggle under as they talk the night away. Cute pajamas or a comfy personalized robe also make a great gift for those sharing a bathroom with others.

Being a Support Network for Your College Student

It can be tough for kids and parents during that first semester or first year away. Everyone is getting accustomed to a different life. Loved ones you’ve seen day in day out for years are now suddenly building their life without you. You may get teary phone calls, not hear anything for weeks, or have a college student anxious to come back home for a visit as soon as possible. It’s all part of the adjustment phase.

Ways to Help the New Student

Rather than supporting the tears and the visits, provide support for the child to remain at school. Greatergood.com recommends supporting your child with self-compassion and kindness. Help them accept that “their difficult feelings are part of the universal experience of leaving home.” Get them to talk about how they are feeling and encourage them to get involved in activities on campus. Set goals to explore one new place a day, or meet one new person a day. Soon they’ll feel far more at home at school! Then it will be your chance to adjust.

A first year away from home can be tough. Knowing that family is still thinking of you, and having small items around that provide the comfort of home can make a huge difference. Little items like toss pillows, blankets, mugs and a favorite stuffed animal can make a dorm room a cozy refuge when the world seems a bit too strange to handle all at once.

6 Reasons insomniacs should use cotton rich sheets

Insomniacs Should Sleep in Cotton

The most common suggestion given to insomniacs is to make their sleeping environment more appealing, relaxing and comfortable. This can be accomplished simply by providing your bed with luxurious cotton rich sheets. The benefits far outweigh the cost as you find yourself sinking into luxury as you remove yourself from the distractions of your day and into the comfort of your opulent bedding.

Six reasons to sleep between cotton rich sheets:

  1. Cotton fabrics have a wonderful matte luster, soft drape and are smooth to the touch making your bed more visually inviting.
  2. Cotton fabrics have excellent absorbing capabilities, keeping you more comfortable, releasing perspiration quickly, allowing the fabric to breathe.
  3. Cotton wears well, will not pill and stands up to abrasions.
  4. Cotton can be machine washed and dried.
  5. Cotton is a great conductor of heat, providing warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer.
  6. Cotton is soft, hypoallergenic and does not irritate the skin.

Changing your bedding may positively impact your sleeping habits and your overall health.

Cotton is the Best Choice for Insomniacs

5 easy ways to care for your bedroom

We all spend a lot of time in our bedrooms, be it sleeping or checking Facebook on our phones in the dark. That’s why it’s important to know exactly how to care for and maintain your nest. Here are five pro tips to keep your bedroom clean and fresh.

1. Wash your sheets the right way

Bed linens need to be pulled off and washed every one or two week. With cotton sheets, it’s important to use warm water when cleaning, as hot water could shrink some of the fibers. If you have any special embroidery or other delicate flourishes, such as some of our sheets, make sure to read the care instructions.

Some embroidery requires gentle hand washing. In those cases, don’t scrub with a brush or rub parts of the sheets together. Instead soak the material to loosen stains and unwanted smudges.

Chlorine bleach may be too gruff for most bed linens. Instead try an oxygenated bleach for white sheets. Gentleness is the main idea to keep sheets in tip-top shape as long as possible.

2. Seal it up

Make sure to use a vinyl mattress cover to protect against spills or leaks. If given the chance, mattresses will sponge up any mess, including ones from human bodies. These are extremely difficult to clean and it’s much easier to prevent the problem in the first place. The vinyl cover will act as a barrier to keep the mattress unsoiled.

3. Vacuum the bed

You have probably heard from time to time that skin cells and dust mites build up inside the mattress and will double the weight over a decade. That’s actually an urban legend, but even though the dramatic scale is wrong, there is still a real problem with shed skin and dust mites. To help combat the menace, every time you strip or rotate the mattress, pull all materials off the bed and use your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery to clean the top and sides of the mattress.

4. Use a duvet

Comforters are difficult to clean, and their bulk requires a commercial-grade washing machine to avoid compressing the item and leaving pockets unwashed. The comforter will still need to be cleaned now and then, but wrapping it in a duvet cover will keep it much cleaner during the stretches of time between cleanings. Duvets should be cleaned in a similar manner to bed sheets.

5. No plants and animals

Constant contact with human bodies already presents a large amount of exposure to bed linens. There’s no need to add on additional problems with animal contact. Cats and dogs leave dander behind, so if you want a clean bed then you need to banish your pets from the bedroom. Even having plants in the bedroom can create some airborne debris, so keep them out of the room too.

Creating A Welcoming Guest Room for All Ages

The holiday season is quickly approaching.  As we prepare for dinners, drinks and laughter, one thing we sometimes forget is hosting family members in our home overnight.

Here are few ways to create a welcoming guest room for you out of town relatives:

1-Clean, crisp sheets and fluffy towels
Nothing says comfort like a bed made up with clean crisp sheets, warm comforter and throws.  Place fluffy towels and face cloths at the end of the bed for your guests to use.  If you want to be even more accommodating, provide them with  a nice soap.

For kids staying over, make them a towel animal for the bed using these tutorials.  Towel Animal Tutorials
Place some bubble bath or cute molded soap with it for them.

2-Provide refreshments
We have all stayed at a relatives house and been hungry or in need of water.  Provide your guests with a few bottles of water and some snacks in their room.  This will make them feel more comfortable and will be much needed after a long flight or drive.  Show off some local items in your guest room from a local chocolatier or snack maker. Place it into a basket or a decorative bowl like this to display it nicely.

Use tips from the blog 7th House on the Left to create the perfect guest room refreshment basket.

3-Reading material
When the family is in town, they may be there for extra time around the big holiday events.  So providing them with something to do will keep them from getting bored.  Provide a few good books, maybe a book about the area, guidebooks, magazines and of course children’s books for kids.  If you have the space, create a small reading nook for them with a comfy chair and throw blanket.

4-Fun things to do
Not everyone loves to read or will want to watch television.  Provide your guests with some small games, toys for the kids or a deck of cards.  For more tips on what to add to your guest room check out Celebrations at Home’s Blog.

5-Electronic Connections
We are a very connected society now.  Your guests may forget their phone charger or may want to access your wi-fi.  Provide a card in their room with your wi-fi login for them get online.  Leave your guests additional chargers for their cellphones if they need it.

6-Fresh flowers or plants
To brighten any room, have a potted plant or a bouquet of flowers.  Just make sure the flowers aren’t overly fragrant in case of allergies.  Plants will help clean the air and also provide a natural look for your room.  Try low maintenance plants, like air plants, spider plants or succulents.

7-Adequate lighting and shades
There is nothing worse than stumbling around a room to find a light switch.  Make sure your guests have lamps and lights to help them find their way.  Also, add in some curtains and shades so they have privacy and can sleep in if they desire.

8-Additional comforts
Provide your guests with ample pillows and blankets.  A small fan may also be helpful for keeping air circulating, cooling the room down and noise cancellation.

extra pillows for guests

9-Leave them plenty of room
Provide empty drawers and closet space to allow your guests to unpack.  They will appreciate being able to hang up their nice clothes and jackets.

10-Consider their sleeping arrangements
You may want to create a room for the kids to enjoy that has toys, stuffed animals and unbreakable stuff.  For guests with physical limitations, consider putting them in close proximity to the bathroom and on the first floor if possible.

Creating a Bedroom Oasis for Better Sleep

We tend to think of making our beds as a routine morning chore, but it turns out the ritual may be more meaningful than that. The results of a recent Bedroom Poll by the National Sleep Foundation found that many people believe clean, neat and comfortable elements of the bedroom environment are important to getting a good night’s sleep.

Not surprisingly, over 90 percent of people said a comfortable mattress and pillows are important to the sleep experience. But more than three quarters of people also believe that the comfortable feel of sheets and bedding are important to a good night’s rest, and 62 percent said that a clean bedroom makes the difference.

People who reported making their bed in the morning were 19 percent more likely to get a good night’s sleep every night. It’s not clear why this is, but perhaps there is a connection between feeling good about where you sleep and your tendency to sleep through the night.

Your bedroom is where you spend lots of time, so it’s important to create a space that’s peaceful, calm, and inviting. We have some ideas to help you make your bedroom a relaxing oasis. See below for ideas on how to get your bedroom looking and feeling as comfortable as possible and help you feel your best!

1-Use some of our fine embroidered cotton sheets for your bed that are 200 or 400 thread count.  Crisp, clean cotton sheets are a great pleasure in life.

2-Match with a duvet cover that is inviting and comfortable.

3-Throw pillows add a special touch to your room and can really make you bed look like a one from a luxury resort when you make it up each morning.

Throw Pillows for a beautiful bedroom

4-Use a comfortable throw blanket for extra cool nights.

5-Keep your room clean and organized.  You’ll sleep better when every thing is put away and you don’t have to worry about stepping on something or tripping in the middle of the night.

6-Minimize electronics in your room.  In order to signal your body that your room is for rest and relaxation, keep computers, TVs and even cellphones out of your room for more restful sleep.

7-Keep your room dark and cool.  Light blocking curtains are helpful for creating a dark environment for you to sleep in.  Even the street lights can be disruptive to your sleep cycle.  Temperature is also important.  Keep your room a little cooler at night.

8-Use aromatherapy.  Keep a lavender sachet by your bed, or use an oil diffuser.  Just make sure that you use soothing calming scents that aren’t too strong.
