8 Tips for Organizing Your Linen Closet

All parts of the home can be beautiful, including the linen closet. With a bit of time and effort, you can turn it from an ordinary part of the house into an aesthetically pleasing one without losing its practicality. So check out these eight tips for organizing your linen closet to get you started.

A built-in closet with white shelves

1.     The first tip is to take some time to declutter

Closets can get disorganized over time, so before you start reorganizing, take out everything you have stored here and go through it. Sometimes, less is more. Make an inventory of all the things you own. Sell, donate or recycle what you don’t need to make room for really useful things you will need in the future. Some things can even be upcycled, like using old towels and turning them into clothes for cleaning. This is an excellent chance to do a deep clean of the closet. Doing this at least once a year ensures that your linen closet always stays tidy.

2. Move on to decorating

Combine functionality and beauty by redecorating your linen closet. This is excellent if you just moved into your new apartment or house because you have a blank canvas to work with. But if you are just looking to move, with advice from cleancutmoving.com, you can pack efficiently and make unpacking much less of a chore. Paint the back wall or use wallpaper to add color to the closet. Buy cute door hangers to incorporate into the room. Put some lovely wall shelves or even some built-in pieces of furniture to store your things.

When storing items such as towels, use a combination of folding and rolling to make it look better organized. Style it and keep similar colors together. Use good lighting in the closet to make finding things more accessible. You can even buy an air freshener or potpourri to make it smell nicer.

3. Categorize your linens

The first step to organizing your linen closet is to separate things into different categories by their use. For instance, pillowcases, sheets, blankets, etc. Furthermore, separate them by their size and then by color. Try to keep all your bed sheet sets and towel sets together. When putting items in drawers, such as towels, you can leave them vertically, so they look nice when opened. This way, things will also be much easier to see and reach.

Make a plan of which items will go where before you start putting things back in the closet. Keep seasonal items in the front and switch them out when necessary. Store bulkier items on the bottom and smaller ones on the top. Your most used items should be at your eye level and easily reachable.

4.  Label all of your linens

When you are reorganizing, label everything as you go. This is the key to organizing any closet, not just a linen one. When everything has its place, the closet will look much nicer. With labeling, it will be easier to pack and move later. If you ever find yourself needing to make an emergency move, you can have it done quickly and with no stress. You won’t have to take down storage containers that aren’t see-through just to find something.

Nowadays, there are so many different types of labels that you can even make them match the room. Chalkboard labels are the best because you can easily change the writing on them. You won’t have to go through piles of things to find something or try to remember which size of sheets are stored where. To make things easier, label what size the sheets are and what is all included in the sets.

5. Use different storage solutions

There are so many different ways to sort your linens. Other than storing them in boxes, you can use drawers or shelves. Baskets are also a fantastic storage solution for closets. They double as décor and are easy to access. Hanging baskets on the wall is a neat solution that looks beautiful and uses vertical space. Recently, it has become more and more popular to use decorative ladders as storage solutions for towels. Alternatively, you can invest in a rolling cart for some smaller items you frequently use or decorative pillows if you have them. For linens that take up too much space, store them in vacuum bags and then in larger bins or shelves.

Another tip is to separate the items in your linen closet by function

6. Maximize vertical space

Make sure to use the vertical space that’s available to the max. Pick out shelves that will go with the aesthetic of the room and the closet. They can be built into the closet or placed individually. You can use hangers on the door or a shoe organizer for some extra storage. If your space is limited, you can invest in some shelf dividers to make it look even better. Consider buying a ladder to access the things on higher shelves safely.

7. Organize your toiletries and cleaning products

Throw out any items that may be expired and sort the remaining ones into categories. You can use a basket with a handle for your cleaning supplies so that they can be quickly taken out of the closet and carried around the house when needed. A well-organized closet removes the risk of forgetting some items and having them go bad. It will be much easier to reach any necessary refills for your home. You can use tissue box covers to make them match the linen closet.

8. Make a designated place for laundry

Image of embroidered linens as decor
Use your linens as decor.

If you have the room, you can have an ironing board built in. Now, you will have a designated space just for ironing. That can easily be tucked away and not collect much dust. Make room near it for iron as well. Buy some laundry baskets to go with the style of the room. You can have multiple to save time and not spend it separating your laundry later. If the space allows, you can build the laundry basket into the closet shelves so it can be hidden.

Final thoughts

As you can see, organizing your linen closet can be a productive and entertaining activity. It will make your space not only more efficient but also more accessible. So let your imagination run wild and have fun making your linen closed a more beautiful space.

Guide to Packing Your Bedroom & Bath Items for Relocation

spacious bedroom

Our bedrooms are our safe havens. They also tend to house many treasured items and closets cluttered with too much stuff. So, packing your bedroom for relocation may feel daunting, especially if you have to deal with a big space. However, there is no need to worry because this guide can help you sort, pack and adequately prepare your bedroom items for moving easily and without too much stress.

The crucial step – declutter your bedroom

Relocation is an excellent opportunity to sort through your items, especially your wardrobe. Leave enough time to get rid of things you no longer need, use, or want. That will make the whole moving process easier, from packing and transportation to unpacking and making your new space tidy from the start. Separate the things you want to keep from those you wish to donate, sell or throw away.

Gather enough packing supplies

If you’ve already sorted and decluttered your stuff, you need to gather enough quality packing supplies. When packing your bedroom for relocation, make sure to have:

  • Enough boxes in a variety of sizes,
  • Mattress covers,
  • Packing tape,
  • Wrapping paper,
  • Shrink-wrap,
  • Paper for writing,
  • Markers and pens,
  • Garbage bags,
  • Cleaning supplies,
  • Tools for disassembling furniture,
  • Moving blankets.

Quality packing supplies will ensure your items are protected during transport.

Pack methodically

When packing for an easy move, take a systematic approach – start packing guest bedrooms first, and then move on to the master bedroom and kids’ bedrooms.

First, you should pack up the least used items (anything you won’t be using until you’re in the new home). To make things easier for yourself, make a list of everything that goes into each box and label them.

Then, pack frequently used items at the very end and, most importantly – don’t forget to pack an essentials bag. This should be an easy-to-identify bag that will cover the first few days after your move. Include the essential clothing, cozy pajamas, and toiletries.

If you want to choose the best technique for packing various bedroom items, consider the following advice:

Wardrobe

Before you pack up your closet, make sure that all your clothes are clean. You probably won’t have enough time to do laundry right after moving. Leave some of your t-shirts as padding to protect your belongings.

Pack your clothing easily by simply placing them in wardrobe boxes. Leave them on the hanger and just quickly transfer them to a closet in your new home when unpacking your bedroom.

You can leave clothing you keep in drawers right there. Just remove the drawer from your dresser, then secure it with wrapping paper and tape.

When packing your bedroom for relocation, declutter your wardrobe and use the right techniques for easy unpacking.

Accessories

If you have any expensive jewelry or other accessories, make sure to pack them in jewelry boxes, secured boxes with compartments, or small cosmetic bags. Then you can group them into one larger bag and place it safely into your car. Have them close by during the moving day to avoid your most valuable items being misplaced, stolen, or lost.

packing your slippers
Can’t forget your slippers and bath item essentials!

It would be best if you left your shoes and comfy slippers inside of their original boxes. If you tossed out the original boxes, wrap your shoes in paper and tape them together, or place them in a bag. Just make sure they are not at the bottom where they can be crushed or damaged.

Bedroom furniture

When packing your bedroom for relocation, disassemble anything that can be taken apart. You should put any screws, nuts, and bolts into a bag, label it, and attach it to part of the furniture they belong.

Furniture surfaces should be covered with paper or shrink-wrap as protection from scratches. Larger pieces of furniture can be covered with moving blankets. Wrap furniture legs with leg protectors.

Before packing your rugs, vacuum them and roll them up. Then, secure them with packing tape. You can cover them with shrink-wrap or an old sheet as a layer of extra protection.

To easily pack especially delicate lamps, remove the shades and light bulbs. Wrap the lamp’s base in shrink wrap and cushion it with packing material to prevent shifting in the box. Pack the shade in a separate box, wrapped in paper so that it doesn’t get crushed or torn during transport.

Blankets, linens, and pillows

embroidered pillows on a child's bed
Wrap your pillows up and use them to protect fragile items when packing.

You can start packing all blankets, sheets, pillows, and pillow covers you won’t need before your move. Leave some blankets and sheets to use as padding for fragile and delicate items. Place your mattress into a mattress bag or box, and it will stay clean and protected.

If you’re renting a storage unit for your belongings, it’s essential to take proper care of your linen. Adequately storing linen, clothing and bedding is vital if you want it to stay safe and clean until you move into your new home. Avoid plastic boxes and plastic bags when packing and storing your fine linens because they can easily retain moisture become moldy. It might be a good idea to place them in a suitcase, breathable containers made of natural materials, or special fabric storage bags.

The bottom line

We hope that this guide to packing your bedroom for relocation will help you speed up the process and decrease stress. Good luck!

How Often Do You Clean Out Your Makeup Bag?

You might be an enthusiastic lipstick collector, or a “less is more” kind of person. Wherever your passion lies when makeup is concerned, one thing is for sure. Makeup, like other products, has an expiration date, and you should be vigilant not to use products past this date. Usually, the expiration date is printed on the container or the box. However, it happens that some pieces of makeup go bad even before their official expiration date. That may happen if you don’t store the products properly. As most of us keep at least some of our makeup in a makeup bag, it is essential to revise the contents occasionally. Spring might be an ideal time to do all sorts of clean-up and an excellent chance to address even your toiletries. So, the question is, how often d

o you clean your makeup bag?

Take a good look at your makeup bag and imagine what it would say

If you took a good look at the contents of your cosmetic bag, you could be surprised how many products have gone past their expiration date. Even if they are not expired, it may happen they have a short shelf life. Once you open a product, it can last three to six months, a year, or two. No one can remember when they opened a lipstick or a compact powder, but a quick inspection should tell you the difference. If your liquid powder is separated or it smells funny, it is time to let it go. On the other hand, if you have been using your bronzer for over a year now but still have plenty left, don’t worry. Powder-based products like bronzers, blushes, and eyeshadows can last for three years. Also, lipsticks have a longer shelf life and can last more than two years.

Clean out your makeup bag and throw out old products

A good piece of advice is to take everything out of your makeup bag and go item by item. Look at the color, the texture, and the smell. If something feels or looks off, it is better to replace it. If your mascara is dry, don’t hesitate to buy a new one. Also, if your liquid eyeliner is getting lumpy, toss it and get a new one. It is better to invest in a couple of new things than risk putting something filled with bacteria on your face. Taking good care of your skin and keeping it healthy is essential. Avoid skin irritation, and try to dry your face with a clean towel and change towels frequently. If you are a tissue kind of person, you can get yourself a tissue box cover to make a statement in your bathroom.

A tissue box cover can be an excellent gift for your makeup-loving girlfriends.

Cleaning your makeup inside and out

When you decide what to keep and throw out of your makeup bag, look at the cosmetic bag itself. Inspect if it is dirty and whether it requires a good wash. Well, there are a few ways to clean it, depending on how dirty it is. You can use waterproof makeup remover to remove stains and traces of your lipstick or eyeshadow. Also, try using some eco-friendly products you have in your kitchen, like baking soda and water. Scrub the insides of your makeup bag as this is a great green way to clean your space and your belongings. If the makeup bag is made of durable materials, you can put it in a washing machine and program it for delicate washing. After cleaning it thoroughly, you can spray it with alcohol or some other alcohol-based sanitizer.

Keep it simple and stick to the essentials

When you manage to clean out your makeup bag, it is time to start fresh and fill it with your stuff. This time keep it simple. Put only the items you use and need. Don’t clutter it with everything you have. There is no universal rule on what makeup essentials are; it all depends on your preferences. If you put mascara on every day, be sure to include it in your makeup bag. However, if you put on your bronzer once every couple of months and often forget that you even have one, it doesn’t go in your makeup bag. Besides having a clean makeup bag, remember to have enough beauty sleep on clean, high-quality pillowcases. You will be doing your skin a favor.

Sleeping on clean pillowcases is great for your skin.

Prevent your beauty products from going bad

Now that you have filled your beauty bag with your makeup essentials. Here are some tips you can use:

  • Make sure you tighten the lid on all your products
  • Always wash your hands and dry with a clean cotton terry cloth towel
  • Store all products away from the sun or sources of heat
  • Don’t keep your beauty products in highly humid places
  • Never share your makeup with anyone
  • Once in a couple of months, check on your eye products

Clean cotton towels are the best option for drying your wet hands.

Spring is a great time to get a clean start

If you are wondering when is the best time to clean out your makeup bag, the time is now. Spring is a great time to have a fresh start. Usually, as spring comes, we use the time to go through our old stuff, declutter and get rid of the things we don’t use. You can use this opportunity to go through your closet, as well. Pull up all the clothes that you haven’t even worn once during the past years. Consider giving them away, selling, or donating them. Also, it would help if you pulled out clothes you don’t need for the season and put them in storage. You can use storage at home or even rent a storage unit if you have the need. You will undoubtedly feel a lot better after decluttering your closet, bathroom, and cosmetic bag. It is a great way to summon that springtime magic.

Five Tips for Packing Cosmetics

The time has come to pack for the relocation to your new home. Don’t forget that you should pack some of your cosmetics and toiletries last. This is so important because you need to stay organized before the big move! Plus, you will need those toiletries (most likely) until the last minute and shortly after you relocate. Properly packing cosmetics is vital for their safe transport and your peace of mind. Here at Jacaranda Living, we love cosmetic bags, cosmetic cases, makeup pouches and all things that help you keep your personal belongings neat and in place.

Tip #1: Know your daily routine and make a list

Before anything else, you should know when and what to pack. If you go through your daily routine, you will get a clear image of which items you should pack last. Several necessary cosmetics products should wait outside the moving box until the moving day morning. All must-have items should go into the bag or backpack you’ll carry on your person, so make sure you wrap them tightly.

Take some time to make a (short) list of essential items if you’re unsure which ones you use daily. Don’t worry if you put away something you might need soon after you move in. If there is anything important that you can’t find in your moving boxes right after the move, you can always purchase it online during sales and promotions. When it comes to cosmetics and toiletries, there are the items you use every day and those you need only on special occasions. Moving day is not one of those occasions. You will want to feel comfortable, and we’re sure that doesn’t require several layers of makeup or hair spray. You are unlikely to use such products within the first few weeks after the move, so you should pack them first. We love embroidered natural linen cosmetic bags because they are less likely to get dirty (compared to white waffle) but regardless, you can throw both fabrics in the wash to get clean if they get dirty along the move.

These Natural Linen Cosmetic Bags have a sturdy top zipper with a “star” slider and a single inside compartment that is plastic lined. Custom monogramming can be added for an extra cost. Please contact us at info@jacarandaliving.com to do it for you.

Tip #2: Declutter before you pack

The less space your moving boxes take, the less you are likely to pay for the move. Saving on the moving costs starts with smart packing, and that is where our toiletry bags come in. Moving is also an excellent opportunity to check what you have and dispose of the excess. If you have too much makeup in good condition, give them away to your friends. That is already one bag fewer to pack!

Most of us buy XL packages of favorite toiletries, and they are often less than half full when we need to move or travel. Ideally, you should pour the liquids into smaller bottles and get rid of bulky packaging before packing. Also, remove your tissue box covers to see how many wipes you have left and place them in a resealable plastic bag to save space. Most importantly, check the expiry dates on your cosmetics. If your makeup has dried out or changed color or scent, don’t waste your time packing it. Get a trash bag into the bathroom with you, check your beauty items piece by piece, and dispose of everything you’re not going to use after the move.

cosmetic bag waffle weave
White Waffle Weave (with inner plastic lining). Beautiful embroidery designs – choose your favorite! A range of sizes to choose from too. The fabric is 100% cotton and easy to wash and dry in the machine.

Tip #3: Get the right moving box

There are various moving containers in the market today made to fit every moving need. You have a choice when it comes to packing cosmetics and toiletries: you can either use cardboard or plastic moving bins. Cardboard boxes are lighter and easy to come by for free. However, take into consideration the safety of your belongings. If one of the more massive pieces of furniture leans on your box with cosmetics, your bottles with liquids may break, soaking not only the cardboard box but all nearby boxes and belongings.

Plastic moving bins, on the other hand, are sturdy, water-proof, and air-tight. They also come in various sizes. While they are not as inexpensive as cardboard boxes, they are worth the price. Not only are they versatile and reusable, but you can easily clean and disinfect them as well. That is something you can’t do with regular cardboard boxes.

Moreover, getting the right moving container before you start packing cosmetics will also help you unpack systematically to save time after the move. The good thing about methodically packed plastic bins is that you don’t even need to empty them. Use them as a container for your toiletries even after you relocate. These floral printed cosmetic bags make it easy to pack because of the plastic lining and waterproof exterior.

Tip #4: Have a system for packing cosmetics

Even though your movers will do everything in their power to ensure smooth loading and unloading, you should wrap your cosmetics tightly. Unscrew the cap, put plastic wrap over the opening, place the cap back, and tighten it. You can always put bottles with liquids of the same type, such as shower gels, in a resealable zipper bag. When it comes to your powdery cosmetics, make sure you don’t leave any space between their packaging. You can use cotton pads as a buffer for your compact mirror, blush, face powder, and similar items. Don’t hesitate to tape the packaging if you worry it’ll open and spill out in transport. If your moving box is too large for its contents, you can use your decorative pillows as the padding material.

Another essential thing to keep in mind is the temperature. If you’re moving during the summer season, note that the moving vans are not climate-controlled. If you leave the box(es) with cosmetics and toiletries in a truck, you risk a few things. High temperatures can cause some of the product packaging to burst. Some temperature-sensitive items can melt, causing their ingredients to separate and, thus, become ineffective. Also, high temperatures can affect your makeup’s quality (and color), so don’t expose your high-end items to the extremes.

Tip #5: Label the box with cosmetics

Making an inventory and labeling your moving containers comes as the last but not the least important tip. Once the moving day is over, there is nothing people need more than to freshen up. Searching for the box with toiletries in the sea of other boxes is the last thing you will need at that moment. Unless you’re moving your cosmetics bags in your car, clearly label the container and mark it as “Fragile.” You can use a specially colored tape to mark this box and find it quickly when needed.

Clearly labeling your box will ensure that nothing else is stacked upon your sensitive belongings, especially during unloading of the moving van. As long as your container with toiletries is on top of other boxes, the items within tightly closed and buffered, your items will arrive safely to your new home.

Cute Bridal Ideas for Your Best Friend’s Wedding

One of my dear friends is getting married in April and I have been coming up with creative ways to splurge on her with fun knick knacks and sweet gifts. Her wedding is going to be in Florida at Jupiter Beach Club and we decided that we would have all her bridesmaids wear Jacaranda Living while getting make up and hair done. I’m so excited to help make it happen.

FOR THE BRIDE

I had the bride go through the Jacaranda Living website and pick a few of her favorite things. It was interesting to see how much she really loved all the nighties as not just to wear to bed but to wear as a beach cover up on the beach and by the pool. The Lisa dress in particular works well for her wedding because it has her wedding logo colors with the blue stitching detail on the bodice. It immediately jumped out to her.

Lisa Nightgown

lisa nightgown_jacarandaliving
Adorable sleeveless ruffled trim nightie with blue smocking embroidery on bodice.

This will be a lovely cover up for her beach days before the wedding.

She fell in love with our new Caftan dress with embroidery and also ordered that as well as the short Kristen nightie.

The Caftan

jacaranda living caftan
Effortlessly chic caftan with drawstring waist and embroidered cascading flowers in blue & green. The perfect outfit for a bride to wear at her honeymoon in Bahamas and during her wedding weekend on the beach!

Nothing gets more comfortable than a caftan especially one that has a flattering adjustment with drawstring at the waist. The embroidered flowers along the body add some elegance and character while long sleeves keep you protected from the sun. It’s a perfect item for the beach and especially for the bride-to-be.

Now something for the bride that’s a bit more romantic…

The Kristen Nightie

kristen nightgown_jacarandaliving
What fun to twirl around in a mini nightie post wedding activities. This is a great dress for the bride’s wedding night! And just perfect for her honeymoon and romantic getaway post wedding. If you got it, flaunt it!

The last item she wants is the plain white nightshirt to monogram so she can match all her beautiful bridesmaids. The bridesmaids will be wearing nightshirts with blue piping and luxurious waffle weave slippers to keep their feet from getting dirty while getting ready on wedding day!

The Marjorie Nightshirt with White Piping

jacaranda living nightshirt for bride
Choose any monogramming and this blue is great for this particular wedding because it’s the same Tiffany blue she wants to match her wedding colors!

FOR THE BRIDESMAIDS

What the bridesmaids wear is very important on the wedding day for photos and to set the mood. It’s even better when bridesmaids are in the same outfit. My friend wants the bridesmaids to be in matching cotton nightshirts with the blue piping that matches her wedding colors. It’s the cutest idea and will look so nice to have all the bridesmaids in the same outfits while they get ready.

The Ginny Nightshirt with Blue Piping

All our sleepwear is made from pure, soft, lightweight, natural cotton fabric that is breathable, durable and extremely comfortable to wear. No need for dry cleaning. Our 100% cotton fabrics only need to be gently washed and cared for in your home. Keep washer and dryer options gentle and cool, not hot, to enable your fine fabric to become softer and cozier with every wash.

And lastly, the slippers and cosmetic bags. The cosmetic bags with blue embroidered holly hocks is a new design by Jacaranda Living and my friend chose it for her wedding because it’s such a beautiful flower that will go nicely with the floral arrangements at her wedding.

Jacaranda Living Takes on NYC: NY Now's Trade Show at the Javits Center

This week we had a successful trade show at the Javit's Center in NYC! There were a lot of new and old faces who came into our booth, and we are so pleased with the feedback we received about our newer styles. Thank you to everyone who came out to support and shop our collections. Here is a little recap of what we showcased at the show and to give you a peep of our newer styles that you might have missed!

Embroidered Guest Towels

Our embroidered guest towels have always been a customer favorite since we started. Boutiques in both resort areas and cities do really well with our wide assortment of designs on Waffle Weave, Terry Cloth and Linen. They make a perfect hostess gift and powder room pick-me-up! We recently added some new styles to the collection, which customers have been raving about. We really appreciate your opinions as well as your suggestions for inspiration! The new Sand Pipers were a big hit this time around. We showed them in blue and white, and will be doing them in shades of sand following quite a few requests at the show.

We work closely with our team in South Africa who stitch the designs and make each item with meticulous attention to detail. If you have new ideas for a design you'd like to see, we'd love to hear them.

Children's Pillows

Our embroidered designs on children's pillows have been growing rapidly! We’re excited to showcase even more playful imagery of kids playing to bring smiles to your little one’s faces. Discover the ones we showed at the show below and let us know your favorite!

Wildlife at Leisure Collection

As you know, we tie most of our designs to our African roots – the very reason we started Jacaranda Living! We recently wrote a blog post on our Whimsical Collection and what makes it so special. It just launched and has already been getting a lot of positive feedback. The cosmetic bags did really well, especially the ones of beautiful animals in the wild or whimsically resting on a couch.

African Cosmetic Bags

These cosmetic bags are unique and the ultimate must-have to hold your smaller items such as pens, lipsticks and toothbrushes. Pick your favorite design from our collection here.

Cosmetic Bag and Matching Slippers

To round out the last bit from the show, here's a shot of our favorite new Bucket of Lavender design, which adds a little French accent to the collection. Hold onto those summer memories of yours in our Bucket of Lavender! You can shop it on tissue box covers, slippers, cosmetic bags, and guest towels.
